Artist : Farai Mangenda
This is a captivating bust of a young African woman, meticulously hand-carved from a stunning piece of butter jade sourced right here in Zimbabwe. The stone itself is a marvel, exhibiting a luminous, creamy pale green hue that evokes the richness of fresh butter, hence its evocative name. This gentle, almost ethereal color is beautifully marbled with delicate veins of slightly darker greens and subtle hints of white, creating a natural, flowing pattern that seems to breathe with an inner light.
The artist has skillfully captured the serene beauty and quiet strength of the subject. Her face, framed by a gracefully draped headwrap, is rendered with soft, flowing lines. The headwrap, intricately carved to suggest folds and texture, rises elegantly above her forehead, adding a sense of poise and dignity. Her features are delicate yet defined: gently closed eyes suggesting a moment of peaceful contemplation, full lips curved into a subtle, almost imperceptible smile, and a softly rounded chin.
Adorning her neck is a substantial, multi-stranded necklace of carved beads, also fashioned from the same exquisite butter jade. The beads, varying slightly in size and shape, cascade down her chest, adding a tactile and visually appealing element to the sculpture. The smooth, cool touch of the jade is almost palpable just by looking at the image.
The carving is smooth and refined, showcasing the inherent beauty of the butter jade. The artist has allowed the natural variations in the stone's color and veining to enhance the sculpture's form, creating a sense of organic movement and depth. The gentle translucence of the butter jade allows light to subtly penetrate the surface, giving the sculpture a soft, almost luminous quality, especially in brighter light.
This piece exudes a sense of tranquility and timeless elegance. The choice of butter jade, with its soothing color palette, further enhances this feeling. It's a sculpture that invites quiet contemplation and offers a touch of serene beauty to any space it graces. Being carved from a single piece of this unique Zimbabwean butter jade, it's not just a work of art, but a tangible connection to the rich geological heritage of our land. It's a piece that speaks of skilled craftsmanship, natural beauty, and a quiet, enduring grace.
