Because springstone is frost resistant, it is also ideal for outdoor display even in temperate climates. Zimbabwe is rich in a variety of stones including serpentine, butter jade, verdite, leopard rock, springstone etc. This expressive form of art has grown in leaps and bounds since 1980. Initially introduced around 1956 by Frank McEwen who was then the Director of The National Gallery of Rhodesia a lot of progress has been made in Zimbabwe. Despite the challenges faced in the country this beautiful art has seen the artistically talented men perfect the art and also able to support their families by playing with stone and producing masterpieces.
